Between March 9–16, 2025, ABDM Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Brandon Simpson led a targeted floor modification on the 4th floor high rack area, closing a 4-inch gap beneath existing kick plates that created a direct falling-object hazard to the floor below.
Challenge
- A 4-inch gap beneath the kick plates created an opening to the floor below
- Tools, materials, or debris could fall through and strike personnel working below
- The area was now being used actively, increasing both exposure and urgency
- Carts needed to be positioned next to workstations, but the existing setup made movement difficult
Actions Taken
- Removed the existing yellow kick plates
- Installed aluminum thresholds to close the floor gaps
- Modified the kick plates to fit the updated configuration
- Added netting beneath the kick plates to catch any material that could otherwise fall through
Outcome
- Closed the floor gap and installed netting beneath the opening, adding multiple layers of falling-object protection
- Eliminated the risk of injury, OSHA exposure, and operational disruption from unsecured floor openings
- Improved cart access to workstations, making the area safer and more efficient for daily operations
- Completed entirely in-house, using only $3,000 in materials and 20 labor hours
Precision in Action. Assurance in Every Step.
The ABDM team transformed an active work area from a potential safety liability into a safer, more efficient part of the operation. By eliminating the falling-object risk and improving workstation access, they delivered a cost-conscious, in-house solution with immediate operational impact.
