When a high-heat zone at a large data center began approaching 80°F during peak summer operations, the ABDM facilities team deployed an improvised airflow intervention that held the zone within safe operating range for approximately one month until a permanent HVAC repair was completed.
Challenge
- The zone requires all four HVAC units to maintain the 68°F server operating standard, meaning a single-unit shortfall already compromises the entire zone’s thermal stability.
- Increased server activity and seasonal heat were pushing temperatures toward 80°F, the threshold at which hardware performance and data integrity become at risk.
- Left unaddressed, sustained heat risked equipment degradation, unplanned downtime, and potential data loss with cascading effects across facility operations.
Actions Taken
- Conducted a zone-by-zone thermal assessment, identifying the highest heat-load areas and mapping airflow gaps in the existing cooling coverage.
- Deployed 350 CFM industrial fans in a directed airflow circuit, exhausting hot air away from heat-dense equipment and drawing cooler conditioned air in from adjacent areas.
- Monitored temperature readings across multiple points in the zone and adjusted the fan configuration as conditions required throughout the intervention.
Outcome
- Zone temperatures were brought to 68-70°F and held there through the full duration of the summer peak.
- No hardware failures occurred during the intervention period.
- The broader facility continued operating without disruption while the permanent HVAC repair was implemented.
Precision in Action. Assurance in Every Step.
A data center with no single-unit redundancy has a narrow window before a cooling problem becomes a hardware loss event. By identifying the gap early and deploying a field solution that held for a month while permanent repairs were completed, ABDM kept the client’s operations intact, their hardware undamaged, and their recovery timeline on their terms. In mission-critical environments, the business value of a fast, controlled response isn’t just what it fixes — it’s the cascade of failures it never allows to start.
